A page from Hopi history- Hopi Men and Alcatraz

This story is one of those few talk about or don't have knowledge of. Reason being that it was yet another sad and trying time of the Hopi. Although this event is in the past, Hopi leave it there to move on and pray for better in fulfilling their life purpose of being earth stewards. History of Mormon pressures on the farming community of Moenkopi triggered the arrests of several Hopi men and sent to Alcatraz prison. In the late 1860's Mormons made their presence known in hopes of converting the Hopi into the Mormon faith. After gaining initial permission from Hopi to farm on a plot, the Mormon began to expand permanent establishments. By the 1870s and 1880s the Mormons slowly began taking over more farming areas. This began the friction between the Hopi farmers and Mormons. By the 1890s, the Hopi lost valuable farming land and their complaints to the government went unnoticed. Around this same time, a new village chief was ordained in the village of Orayvi. His name was Looloma of the bear clan. He was proactive in addressing these issues in Moenkopi and took matters into his own hands. Chief Looloma held a meeting with the clan leaders of Moenkopi village and told them that they had every rite to take back their traditional farm lands. Once this took place, the Mormons quickly confronted the Hopi farmers and sought out the  government for help. The government saw this opportunity to so call "teach Hopi a lesson", and soliticed the military from Ft. Wingate and Ft. Defiance. After discovering the "ring leaders" of the Hopi resistance, the military charged and took into custody Yukima and Lomahongniwa of Orayvi. Overall, nineteen men were charged with "seditious acts against the U.S, Government". This Alcatraz story exemplifies the treatment of the Hopi people by the U.S Government and the extent to which the Government used false and concocted charges to imprison Hopi men....men who only wanted to live their Hopi way of life.

The Hopi Dawa t-shirts symbolize Dawa, the sun spirit, believed to have formed the first world from Tokpela, or endless space. In Hopi tradition, Hopi pray to Dawa for blessings of a good long life for all living things. Dawa is the creator of life of all living things.

EXPLORE HOPI AND HOPI CULTURAL CENTER COLLABORATE TO HOST FAM TOUR!!
On Friday, September 13,2013, Explore Hopi and the Hopi Cultural Center teamed up to host a FAM tour as a way of networking with businesses off the Hopi reservation. Our goal, being able to spread the word of Explore Hopi and bring visitors to experience Hopi and all it has to offer.  Our guests involved came from the surrounding Chamber of Commerce (Holbrook, Flagstaff and Sedona), tour companies, reporters, and from Arizona State Tourism Office . The guests were greeted my members of the Explore Hopi Team, Carliss Sinquah and Hannah Honani. Introductions were given by Explore Hopi Director, Clarice Tafoya, Hopi Cultural Center General Manger, Darren Tungovia, Pat Browning, Hopi 3 Canyon Ranches, and Hopi Tribe Economic Development Corporation CEO, Kevin Lombardo. They explained the mission and collaboration efforts among HTEDC entities and of Explore Hopi as well as the goal of what we hoped our guests can come away with at the end of the day. Demonstrators were on site to entertain and educate FAM tour participants. Garrett Honahnie demonstrated kachina doll carving, Dianna Shebola exhibited "kutuki", or parched corn, and Dianna Setalla showed off her pottery. Along with the education theme, guests had the opportunity to tour on-site Povi Gallery and the Hopi Museum. The FAM tour then continued on with an traditional style lunch that consisted of "Noqwivi", or the traditional lamb stew with hominy, blue corn frybread, and green chili. For dessert our guests were able to enjoy the "Tsukus Delight", a signature item only the Hopi Cultural Center offers, that consists of frybread tossed in cinnamon sugar, topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup. Soon after lunch our guests were sent off on a tour to Dawa Park with well-known Hopi tour guide, Gary Tso. Dawa Park is a petroglyph site on Hopi with many years of history and significance.
At the conclusion to the FAM tour, our guests were left with an experience to take back and share with others. They are able to come away with saying " I have been to the Center of the Universe".
